‘A CALL TO ART’: WILLIAM MORRIS AND THE PRE-RAPHAELITES AT THE FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM, CAMBRIDGE, WEDNESDAY 28TH OCTOBER 2026
This visit follows TASGV’s Study Day on 6th October, which includes reference to William Morris’s Arts and Crafts movement and its challenge to the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century. The Arts and Crafts movement dared to imagine an alternative, fairer future with art for all. ‘A Call to Art’ goes beyond the well-known decorative motifs and medieval love stories to demonstrate Morris’s and his colleagues’ belief in the power of art and beauty to bring about positive social change, a concept still relevant today. The exhibition brings together paintings, drawings, textiles and ceramics, including rarely seen examples from the Fitzwilliam’s own collection.
The Fitzwilliam Museum is fully accessible with a café and an excellent shop. Portable stools are available on request. A locker will be allocated to our group on arrival.
Exhibitions at the Fitzwilliam Museum are no longer free, and they also charge for group visits. The total cost pp is £46 to cover coach, group entrance and exhibition. 18 places have been booked for the exhibition and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. I have booked our group entrance at 11.15am, with 2 time slots for the exhibition. (There will be time to use the museum’s facilities before the first slot.) 9 exhibition entrances are booked @ 12- 12.30pm and 9 @ 2- 2.30pm. Please indicate which time slot you prefer on the booking form. Again, places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
A TRIP TO CAMBRIDGE FOR £25 PP? In addition to the 18 exhibition places spare seats on the coach can be offered at a bargain price of £25 return: an opportunity to see the sites or enjoy some early Christmas shopping! We will arrive at about 11am at the Backs (behind Queens College) and leave from outside the Fitzwilliam at 4.30pm. Both places are a 10-minute walk from the city centre.
PICK-UP POINTS: Cley – 8.15 am – park in village hall car park, then walk down Town Yard to the junction with Holt Road. Or Holt war memorial bus stop – 8.30 am. Return at approximately 6pm.
