Our trails aim to assist you to explore local places of interest and maybe stimulate and inspire you to appreciate the beauty, history and heritage of this part of North Norfolk.
We now have five trails which can be downloaded here:
A Guide to Exploring the Glaven Valley
This is a new trail, centred around the Glaven River, a rare chalk stream. It is intended for adults and children, whether local or visitors. There are 10 places highlighted which can be explored at leisure. Some are well-known such as Blakeney (see below) and Cley-next-the-Sea. Others are less well known but worthy of visiting such as Glandford with its picturesque ford and Childrens’ Church Trail and the tranquil Selbrigg Pond. There are handy links in the trail leaflet to websites for the interested visitor to find out more about each location and maybe find a local walk
Blakeney Neighbourhood Trail
A walking trail of just under 1 mile which takes you round this pretty village and highlights its medieval past, port and interesting buildings. The short walking trail takes you from the Car Park at the Parish Council Offices at the top of the village, across the grassy Pastures and down the High Street to the Quay which was once a bustling and wealthy port. Among many points of interest find out about Mariners’ Hill, a man-made look out in former times where cannon balls have been excavated, and the interesting story of the village sign.
Childrens’ Trails
We have Childrens’ Trails for St Margaret of Antioch, Cley, St Martin’s, Glandford and St Andrew’s Letheringsett. These Trails are for children aged 8 to 12, but people of all ages find them fascinating. They encourage children to explore the buildings, to learn about them and enjoy the experience. The Trails guide the participant around the building using a simple questionnaire. For example at the Cley church participants are asked to find the stained-glass picture of a sparrow and why it is there. At the Glandford church they are asked to find the pew that has a carving of a dog and to guess what the dog is guarding and at the Letheringsett church they can find out why Alms Chests often had more than one key.
As well as a question sheet each trail has an informative answer sheet for accompanying adults. There are usually paper copies of the Question sheets in the churches. And to bring us bang up to date we have a poster with a QR code for each church from which both questions and answers can be downloaded to a smart phone or tablet.
Finally we have a short leaflet with the QR code for each trail from which all of the trails can be downloaded. Enjoy!
