November 2025 Newsletter

October was a busy month for our Society, with a big audience for Sue Jackson’s entertaining lecture on the Huguenot Silk Weavers of Spitalfields. Earlier in the month a group of us enjoyed the Special Interest Day led by Barbara Askew, introducing the interconnected but idiosyncratic art collections and interests of the three King Charles’s. Please do make a note of our next SID: 10 March 2026, when Peter Medhurst will discuss – and demonstrate - ‘Paintings inspired by Music and Music Inspired by Paintings’ – a day that will surely prove popular.

On the subject of SIDs, at the recent Area Meeting of East Anglian Arts Societies, our Honorary Secretary Carolyn Thomas-Coxhead heard about various very successful days enjoyed by other societies, on subjects from the Art of Paris (1890s to 1937), to the Art of Cornwall 1880-1975, Romantic Moderns (Ravilious, Bawdon and the brothers Nash), Watercolour in Britain and Ceramic Stories. Meanwhile our SIDs organiser, Scilla Landale, has found some interesting options on the subject of Gardens for our 2026-2027 season – either as art or as the subject of art. We’d really like to hear from you if any of these topics appeal, or if there are others on which you’d enjoy a SID. Do please contact Scilla or any Committee member, either at a lecture or by email (details on our programme card).

The standard of our lectures is very important to you as a member, to our committee and to the Society as a whole. Our Head Office reviews lecturer performance throughout their time with the Society and it is important that we feed back our views of our lectures and SIDs so that Head Office has an up-to-date knowledge of performance. We send you an email on the day of the lecture as your view really counts. So do please complete and submit the brief form - it only takes a minute or two.

Head Office is making strenuous efforts on our behalf to raise the profile of The Arts Society with a view to making more people aware of the excellent lectures provided and to increase membership – both of which are very important to us. There are now a number of excellent short videos called 'Art Takes’ on art subjects on YouTube (search there for The Arts Society). As well as enjoying them yourself please download and share them with your friends who may be interested. Here is one Art Take, just four minutes long, on Rembrandt’s Night Watch. In terms of recruitment, we know that you, our members, are our very best agents, and as our numbers are still down on last year’s we hope you will continue to bring your friends and neighbours along as guests to experience a talk. As an added incentive, we are increasing the value of the book-token reward offered to anyone recruiting a new member from £10 to £20!

Surely many of us must know someone not currently a member who’d like to come along to our next lecture on 18 November, when Mr Christopher Garibaldi, a former Director of the National Horseracing Museum at Newmarket, will speak on ‘Leonardo’s Horses: Equine Studies of Leonardo da Vinci’. This lecture is billed as ‘a celebration of how Leonardo, perhaps the greatest of all Renaissance artists, interpreted ‘horsepower’ at the height of his career’. Not to be missed!

With best wishes

Lucilla Burn  TASGV Co-Chair

New members day

New members and anyone considering joining are invited to come and hear about everything the Society does. It will be held at:

2pm-3pm on Tuesday 28th October at Cley Village Hall

If you haven’t been able to make one of these events before, you would be very welcome to join us and meet other new members along with some who are considering whether to join.

This welcome event gives us an opportunity to tell you about all the activities we organise including study days, visits, social gatherings and volunteering opportunities. Importantly, it also provides us with an opportunity to hear what you would like from the Society.

I would be grateful if you could let the Membership Secretary  know if you are able to come and the names of any guests, so that we can manage the catering for the event.

Email tasgvmembership@gmail.com

For anyone who hasn’t yet managed to visit our location, the address is: Cley Village Hall, The Fairstead, Cley NR25 7RJ.
