CHURCH RECORDING
Church Recording has been a volunteering activity of The Arts Society, formerly NADFAS, for almost half a century. It is sponsored and supported by our Society. The national organisation for Church Recording is now the Church Recording Society, a charity belonging to, and run by, all Church Recorders who are members of The Arts Society.
What is Church Recording? The main aim is to produce a comprehensive Record to raise awareness and promote the recognition of the heritage within churches, thus enabling its preservation and protection. The fabric of the church and its contents are examples of fine craftmanship, art and design of many ages.
Recorders write a detailed description of the internal furnishings and fabric of the church in a prescribed format. Measurements and photographs are taken and wherever possible research undertaken on the verification of identity and provenance.
Completed Records become part of the national archive, with copies held at the local Records Office, Historic England, ChurchCare and the National Art Library at the V & A.
Having produced Records for both Wiveton and Langham Churches we are starting a new group to record our next church, All Saints Upper Sheringham. New members will be very welcome. No experience is necessary, merely enthusiasm, an inquiring mind and an interest in history, architecture or just church furnishings. Training is given.
Church Recording is an opportunity to learn and to apply knowledge in a national project. It is a friendly and sociable volunteering activity and often exciting discoveries are made along the way. The group meets once a month at the church, but much of the recording can be done at home. We would love you to join.
