| Visit to Wolterton Hall |
This fine Palladian masterpiece was conceived by Horatio Walpole who acquired the land and an ancient manor house in 1722, when his brother Sir Robert Walpole (PM) was building Houghton Hall. In 1724 Horatio engaged the architect Thomas Ripley and together they created this imposing Hall, completed in 1741. We have negotiated a private guided tour (1pm to 2.30pm) of the accessible parts of the house as well as access to their 2026 art exhibition, plus refreshments. The total cost will be £30 per person for up to 25 people. Wolterton Hall is approximately 10 miles from Holt, Sheringham and Cromer.
Travel will be by own transport: we suggest car sharing where possible. The Satnav postcode is NR11 7LY.
Wolterton organises their own catering using some Bread Source products. Refreshments are served in the historic library. The café is open from 11am so you may want to arrive early to have a light lunch before our tour starts at 1pm. After the tour, we will be provided with tea/coffee plus a slice of cake. Please indicate on the booking form which type of cake you prefer, using one tick per person. This refreshment is included in the £30 cost of the visit.
Wolterton Hall is one of four grand houses of Norfolk. There are many portrait paintings inside, including a very large portrait of Horatio’s family and various portraits of the royal family.
2016 - Award winning restorers Peter Sheppard and Keith Day took on a meticulous restoration of Wolterton Hall with a contemporary twist. 2022 - Wolterton Hall won a Georgian Group Architectural Award. 2023 - Wolterton Hall was joint winner of Historic Houses restoration award. 2023 - Wolterton Hall taken on by the Ellis family with strong connections to Norfolk.
2026 - Art Exhibition by two artists:
PHYLLIDA BARLOW will exhibit in three rooms in the house and in the landscaped grounds. There will be works on paper and large scaled sculptural installations in the grounds (70 works done over five decades). Phyllida’s works are entitled ‘Disruptor’.
DAISY PARRIS will exhibit in a newly developed ground floor gallery with paintings and a large-scale textile installation in an exhibition entitled ‘Fist Full of Dreams’

| Christmas Lunch |
Following a very successful and enjoyable event last year, we will again be holding our Christmas lunch at the Blakeney Hotel, on Tuesday 9th December. This year we are delighted to say that we have once more been offered a welcome drink – a glass of prosecco or a fruit juice – included in the menu price. We’ll be sitting down to eat at 12.45 with drinks available from 12.00; we think the menu prices are jolly good for the quality of the choices offered and the lovely ambience of the Blakeney Hotel. Anyone wishing to have wine with the meal should order this at the bar. Click here for the Christmas Lunch menu and booking form Note that the deadline for booking and menu choice is Thursday 27th November. Please send any queries and return your choices and bookings to me, Averil Cooper at averilcooper@gmail.com Budgeting for something like this is, as you can imagine, extremely tight so it must be very clearly understood that if any bookings have to be cancelled, for whatever reason, there can be no refunds unless someone has been found to fill the place. We hope to see as many as possible of you at the lunch.
With best wishes

| Visit to Euston Hall, Suffolk |
Please note that we have been advised that the hall tours are NOT suitable for those with limited mobility - sorry. I have booked a small coach and bought 30 tickets for the hall and gardens of Euston Hall. To reduce travelling costs, I have arranged just 2 pick up and drop off locations. The total price is £35.00 per person. 1.Cley Village Hall – this is our normal venue for lectures and has free parking all day. Pick up will be at the bottom of Town yard on the Holt Road. This is a short walk from the car park. Pick up time will be 8.20 am and drop off time approximately 15.40 pm. 2.Holt War Memorial bus shelter – This is enroute and handy for those who live in the centre of Holt. Pick up time 8.45am and drop off time approximately 15.15 pm. We will arrive in good time for the 10.15am tours of the hall. (Toilets are available at the Hall) Euston Hall is a red bricked Georgian style property which has been described as ‘Suffolk’s Hidden treasure‘. Small groups are taken on a journey through this home by friendly knowledgeable guides. The Hall and grounds have been painstakingly restored since 2012 by the current 12th Duke of Grafton (Henry FitzRoy) who inherited the dukedom from his grandfather in 2011. Bold colours offer a beautiful decorated backdrop to a wide collection of art, furniture and objects d’art. The magnificent paintings include works by Stubbs, Lily, Van Dyck and Kneller plus collections of fine art from Arlington House London. This art and other precious items were rescued from a fire at the Hall in 1902. Historical aspect – Isabella Arlington married Henry FitzRoy (illegitimate son of King Charles II) in 1672. Henry was the 1st Duke of Grafton and Isabella contributed the Euston estate to the marriage. The Euston estate became the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Grafton. Our tour should finish at about 11.35am. Homemade lunches and refreshments (excellent reviews online) are available in the old kitchens at reasonable prices in aid of local charities. May I suggest that you have some refreshments at this time while there is still plenty of choice, before exploring the grounds: PLEASURE GROUNDS are formal gardens designed by John Evelyn in the time of King Charles II. WATERWAYS were designed by Capability Brown. Look out for Brown’s blueprints which are exhibited in the Hall. HISTORIC WATERMILL which looks more like a church. CHURCH OF ST GENEVIEVE which was started by the 1st Duke of Grafton and is the final resting place of all the Dukes of Grafton. The café closes at 2pm which is when we will depart in our coach back to Norfolk. Our coach will be parked onsite. See separate booking form to secure your place. Judging by the responses to the questionnaire, this trip is likely to be popular. CLICK HERE FOR THE BOOKING FORM. PLEASE BOOK BY 30TH APRIL. PLEASE NOTE THAT REFUNDS CAN ONLY BE GIVEN IF SOMEONE ELSE TAKES YOUR PLACE. ENQUIRIES TO LINDA FROST visits organiser, mobile 07951657950 OR email tasgv24visits@gmail.com |

| Visit to Gainsborough's House in Sudbury |
Unfortunately, this visit has had to be cancelled. Our Spring visit takes us to the newly refurbished Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury Suffolk which houses a large collection of Thomas Gainsborough’s paintings as well as temporary exhibitions of other leading artists’ work. Thomas Gainsborough (1727–88) was born in Sudbury. In 1958, the Gainsborough’s House Society bought the house and established it as a centre for Thomas Gainsborough. The Museum has remained open for over 50 years. In November 2022, it re- opened to the public after a transformational refurbishment. On arrival we shall be served refreshments before we enjoy a guided tour of the house and galleries, including the current exhibition of works by Philip de Laszlo (1869 – 1937) one of Europe’s most famous portrait painters who settled in England in 1907. This exhibition features rarely seen works, including some from the Royal Collection. We shall then have a light lunch together, leaving time to re-visit the galleries, stroll around the beautiful garden, or explore the shop. Our return journey takes us to nearly Lavenham where we will have some free time to explore this lovely village before continuing our return home. Entry to the Guildhall is free to National Trust members and there is a magnificent Grade 1 listed church. Or you could explore the many little antique shops. Gainsborough’s House is mostly accessible by wheelchair, the only exception being an area on the very top floor. Doors to the ground floor galleries have access via an assisted door button. There is a lift serving the upper floors, and hand-rail access on all stair routes as well leading out into the garden and main House. There is ramp access in the garden and leading to the café. There are disabled toilet facilities around the site. There are substantial discounts on the admission charges for members of the Art Fund who will have to pay just £5 entrance fee on the day. If you are a member of Historic Houses or the Museum Association, it’s even better as there is no admission fee at all. If you don’t hold any of these cards, or forget to bring them on the day, the admission cost is £13. The cost of the day, including travel, gratuities, admission as appropriate, the guided tour, refreshments and lunch is £47 if you do (although Art Fund members will need to pay £5 on the day). If you do not bring a valid qualifying membership card on the day you will have to pay the full entrance fee. If you want to come along on this visit, please complete the booking form and return it to me by email or post with confirmation that you have paid by BACS or your cheque for £60 or £47 per person, by 16 April. Please include a stamped addressed envelope for an acknowledgement if you do not provide an email address. Please note that refunds can only be given if I can fill your place. | Visions of Egypt |
This exhibition is at the UEA Sainsbury Centre. A coach will be arranged due to the difficulties of parking and access. Over 150 works drawn from collections in the UK and internationally will examine how ancient Egypt has shaped our cultural imagination. From antiquity, when the Great Pyramid was revered as a wonder of the ancient world, to the Cleopatra of Shakespeare’s stage, this ground-breaking exhibition explores this ongoing engagement with ancient Egypt and charts its many forms across centuries of art and design. The exhibition examines how the iconic motifs and visual styles of Egypt have been re-imagined and re-invented over time – revealing a history closely entwined with conquest and colonial politics. Following this, you may wish to attend the 'Preparing for Death' study day on the 7th March 2023. For more details of the visit with the booking form, click HERE |

| Virtual tour of David Parr House |
On 23 February, courtesy of Zoom, we are taking you to Cambridge for a virtual tour of the David Parr House. David Parr was a Victorian decorative artist who worked for the firm FR Leach on commissions from the Arts and Crafts giants of the 19th century, including William Morris. He obviously thought that his family deserved to live in similarly stunning surroundings, so he set about decorating his own very modest house in Cambridge. After his death in 1927 his family continued to live in the house and left it untouched – a true time capsule in the heart of Cambridge. Our guide Tamsin Wimhurst is a social historian and the chair of the David Parr House Trust. Under her leadership the house has been researched and conserved, and recently gained Grade II* listing. Tamsin will first give us a talk about the house and then lead a virtual guided tour around it. This will be a unique opportunity to see a unique building. The house can only accommodate about six people at a time. It’s also quite expensive so we have no plans to arrange a trip there. So we are doing the next best thing. The virtual tour starts at 10.30am on Tuesday 23 February and the link to join the tour will be sent out nearer the time, so please check your email. |

We will pass by the oldest gondola yard on our way to the Accademia Bridge for a final view of the Grand Canal. If the weather is kind we will see Venice in the golden hour before sunset, which is all the more spectacular in winter. The tour will start at 2.00pm on Tuesday 26 January but full details will be sent nearer the time with the Zoom link. |

| One Day Visit to Kings Lynn - Clifton House and Historic Kings Lynn |
In the morning we shall visit Grade 1 listed Clifton House - a medieval merchant’s house in the heart of the town, published in Invitation to View, it retains an amazing series of historic interiors dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries. With two tiled floors from the later 13th century (the largest in-situ tiled floors in any secular building in Britain); the 14th-century vaulted undercroft; the five-storey Elizabethan tower and a series of rooms created by the architect Henry Bell in 1700. A very interesting private property recommended to me by a number of members. Usually only on certain Fridays until September, I have been able to secure the morning of Friday, 6th October for a guided group tour with one of the owners, Dr Simon Thurley and Dr Anna Keay. (Unfortunately, I am advised Clifton House is not suitable for people with impaired mobility due to the number of stairs.) We shall have time for free-flow lunch and we shall meet at 2.30pm for the 1½ hour guided-walking tour, Historic Lynn. Travel will be by coach from our usual pickups (Holt/Cley/Fakenham) and the cost is £32.00 per person Please click on the link below to access the booking form. http://gvdfas.org.uk/DocumentStore/Kings%20Lynn%20Visit.pdf Image of Thomas Snelling's dining room courtesy Dr Simon Thurley |

Silk: From Spitalfields to Sudbury (17 June – 8 October 2017) on display at Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury, explores the local and national history of silk in England from the eighteenth century to the present day, focussing on the diaspora of silk manufacture from Spitalfields in London to Sudbury in Suffolk. As requested, I am arranging a one-stop visit to the Silk Exhibition for those members who are interested in re-visiting Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury for this event. If there is sufficient interest I will arrange coach transportation which can be paid for nearer the time, or we will travel independently by car-share. Tickets are on request and a £10 deposit is for cost for entry and refreshments and a further payment will be required if a coach is required. | Visit to Spitalfields and Dennis Severs' House |
Photo Alanwill Following out very popular Study Day on the "Cultural Legacy of the Huguenots" a visit has been arranged to Spitalfields with a tour of Dennis Severs' House. Sue Jackson, who was our Study Day lecturer, will be our guide for the Spitalfields visit. Dennis Severs House is described as a "still-life drama" created by the previous owner as an "historical imagination" of what life would have been like inside for a family of Huguenot silk weavers.
